Bangalore: Former councillor E. Krishnappa, who is also the husband of Kuvempungar councillor Yashodamma (Congress), along with a Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) engineer, were booked by the police on charge of beating up a small-scale unit owner who refused to pay them protection money.

Ramesh, the complainant, who owns a lathe machine unit employing nine persons, had shifted his business from the Peenya Industrial Area to Vidyaranapura.

On July 1, he was winding up when Krishnappa, BBMP area engineer Ranganath and three others barged into his unit. The duo started inspecting the unit and reportedly demanded Rs. 1 lakh protection money. When a shocked Mr. Ramesh told them he had a valid licence, Krishnappa abused him and threatened him with dire consequences, the complaint said.

Mr. Ramesh rebuffed them and was beaten up by the duo. He was rescued by his employees.

The Vidyaranyapura police have booked a case against Krishnappa and Ranganath.
