Cloudy weather and a touch of rain failed to dampen spirits as enthusiastic canines and their owners congregated at the lush Jayamahal Palace lawns for the start of 26th and 27th All-Breed Championship Dog Shows organised by the Bangalore Canine Club on Saturday.

More than 400 dogs of a variety of breeds including golden retrievers, Labradors, pugs, Siberian huskies and German shepherds are participating in the two-day event.

Club representative Suresh P.A. said: “There are about 450 dogs and 47 groups for which competition will be held. The dogs will be judged for their breed standards.”

There was a proper standard for every breed, he said, adding that German shepherds were used for “herding” while Labradors and golden retrievers are meant for “hunting”. The winners will be declared on Sunday at the end of the event, which is being judged by a panel of international judges. Dog owners, too, appeared excited while participating in the show. “I hope my dog will get a good grade from the judges as I have been preparing him for this event for past few months,” said Dev, owner of a Siberian husky.
