Emission certificate racket exposed

June 26, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:49 am IST - Bengaluru:

If you ever wondered how a vehicle billowing smoke moving in the city’s polluted thoroughfares could pass the emission test, here is the answer. You pay double the cost and walk away with an emission fitness certificate.

On Thursday, the Central Crime Branch sleuths raided six emission test centres, which were issuing certificates without following procedure prescribed by the Transport Department.

As per the procedure, the vehicle had to be tested for emission multiple times to get the exact reading which is to be uploaded onto the Transport Department website, but these centres were entering random numbers.

Police said that four of the centres are owned by Yogesh, president of the Emission Test Centres Association.

The CCB raided emission centres on HAL Airport Road, at Byappanahalli, Koramangala, K.G. Halli and Jalahalli and arrested the people manning these centres, including Yogesh.
