Electronic City flyover will be closed for repairs for six hours starting from Saturday midnight and Sunday midnight (between 12.30 a.m. and 6 a.m.) for servicing of the expansion joints.

Capt. Baldev Singh of the Bangalore Elevated Tollway Ltd. said: “We have decided to close the flyover at night as major work is required and traffic is low during the night time.”

Accidents had been reported on the flyover earlier due to gaps being formed at the expansion joints. Each expansion joint has rubber between two blocks to act as a cushion for expansion and contraction of asphalt. In January, a biker fell after his front wheel got stuck in an expansion joint, causing a serial accident.

While most expansion joints are placed horizontally, they need to be placed vertically in the direction of traffic flow near lay-bays and at diversions on flyovers, and as result there is a risk of bike wheels getting stuck in the gaps.
