Bursting at the seams

Scores of people thronged the public gallery in the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to witness the election of Mayor B.S. Sathyanarayana and Deputy Mayor Indira. With no space to even sit, the public gallery was bursting at the seams. The immediate and extended family members of Mr. Sathyanarayana and Ms. Indira were present to extend moral support. Soon after they were elected, there were catcalls and whistles from the gallery, even as the councillors and MLAs sitting below tried to signal to them to not make any noise and disrupt the election proceedings.

Stuck in lift

The new Mayor said he would focus on filling the potholes. But may be, he should first look into the maintenance of lifts/ elevators in the BBMP head office. On Wednesday, a man got stuck in the lift in the council building, between the first and ground floors. It was after a good 10 minutes that the security and group D workers heard his screams. Soon after they were able to open the doors of the lift, the man scurried outside and left without so much as a backward glance.

Full support from families

The families of both Mr. Sathyanarayana and Ms. Indira have pledged to extend full support to them to help them “work for the development of the city.” Usha Sathyanarayana, wife of the new Mayor, said that after getting to know that he was going to be the Mayor, Mr. Sathyanarayana sat his family down and asked them not to burden him with household work. “He knows the pulse of the people and I am confident that he will work for the city,” she said.

Ms. Indira’s parents — Narayanappa and Jayamma — have assured their daughter that they will not interfere with her work. Her young daughter, Harshika, who is a standard seven student, said that she wanted her mother (Indira) to bring back the glory that the Garden City had lost.
