An elderly woman lost her gold jewellery worth Rs two lakh, early on Tuesday, after three miscreants masquerading as policemen convinced her to hand over to them her valuables for "safekeeping".

Police said the victim Lalitha, 69, was accosted by the miscreants while she was returning home from a visit to a temple in Girinagar.

The three unidentified miscreants approached the victim on Vidyanagar main road and claimed they were from the Central Crime Branch (CCB).

Stating that it was unsafe for her to wear the gold jewellery, the miscreants convinced her to remove the gold valuables and hand it over to them, saying they would wrap it safely and give it back. However the miscreants made away with the gold before the woman realized she was conned, police said.
