Efforts by Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to scientifically dispose of the accumulated waste at the landfill in Mandur seem to have come to nought. Though the civic body has floated a tender to clear the waste, officials doubt if the project will ever be implemented.
A senior official told The Hindu that there are certain details in the tender that needed tweaking and would be submitted to the solid waste management expert committee for “guidance and approval”. The tender was floated three months ago but was not finalised due to the model code of conduct.
BBMP wants the accumulated garbage to be disposed of through a waste-to-energy project. As per the proposal, five units were to come up at the landfill. “The project will work if all the five units are managed by one company. If one company is to set up five units, it requires a huge investment,” the official said.
The official added that some people are now claiming that power cannot be generated from the accumulated waste at Mandur landfill, as it is mixed with mud. “We will consult the expert committee about this issue as well,” the official said. Stressing on the urgency of setting up processing units to dispose of accumulated waste, the official that the landfill would be full in around a year’s time. “Unless we start processing the accumulated waste, we will have to find alternative dumping sites for the city’s garbage,” he said and added that if the issue of solid waste management is not tackled immediately, it may snowball in the BBMP Council.
