An endurance athlete, an interaction designer and a social entrepreneur were honoured at the third edition of the Earthian Award, instituted by Wipro Ltd., whose central theme was “Water”.
Endurance athlete Girish Mallya is the only Indian to complete the Marathon Des Sables. Sumit Dagar, an interaction designer and engineer, is designing a Braille smart phone.
Sanchaita Raju, founder of Social Awareness Newer Alternatives, a water and sanitation provider to rural India, works with the communities and panchayats in villages to set up toilets there. She said that her organisation also uses technology to filter and remove impurities in water as per WHO standards.
Earlier, several schools and colleges were given the Earthian awards by Anurag Behar, Chief Sustainability Officer of Wipro Ltd.
The selected institutions become part of a three-year continuous engagement program, a collaborative exercise that brings the institute and sustainability partners together to create unique learning experiences and approaches for both teachers and students.
