Earth caves in burying labourer engaged in drain work

A BBMP contract labourer was asphyxiated after a heap of mud collapsed on him when he was engaged in construction of a storm-water drain at K.P. Agrahara on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Chunchaiah (60), native of Chittoor district in Andhra Pradesh. The victim had reportedly come to the city a fortnight ago in search of work. He was employed by BBMP contractor Ramesh Naidu.

The police said that Mr. Naidu had sent a group of six workers, including Chunchaiah, for construction of the storm-water drain.

The incident occurred at around 12.30 p.m. Earth caved in when Chunchaiah was digging a trench. He was rushed to hospital where he was declared him “brought dead”.

According to the police, Chunchaiah did not have any safety gear.Ramesh Naidu was arrested on charge of causing death due to negligence and remanded in judicial custody.

Senior officials from the BBMP visited the spot and announced a compensation of Rs. 1 lakh to the family of the deceased.
