At an age when children learn to stand or take their first steps, Sanish was undergoing dialysis sessions.
At the age of 1, he was diagnosed with medullary cystic disease of the kidney, which began with high fever and problems in urinating. He had to undergo 38 sessions of dialysis before he was eligible for a kidney transplant.
With his mother as a donor, he underwent a transplant at the age of 12 in 2002.
All was fine till 2012, when he started vomitting blood. Doctors told him that he had problems with his liver, which was affecting the transplanted kidney. Visits to multiple doctors did not help.
Then he was recommended to Sumana Kolar Ramachandra, Chief of Liver Transplant, Columbia Asia Referral Hospital, Yeshwanthpur.
After a liver biopsy, the doctor told him family that Sanish needed a combined liver and kidney transplant.
The surgery was performed on February 1 this year by a team of doctors at the hospital, after a family donated the organs of their loved one who was brain dead. Many hospital staff also donated blood and platelets needed for the transplant surgery.
“Sanish’s transplant was complex as he was suffering from both liver and kidney failure and it took 11 hours for our team of 30 doctors and nurses to complete the surgery,” said A.S. Soin, surgeon and pioneer in the field of liver transplantation.
Also, post-surgery Sanish was more prone to infections. “He had post-operative infections, but was able to come out of the trauma,” said Dr Sumana . Sanish, now 26, has been discharged from the hospital is doing well.
