An assistant sub-inspector attached to Electronics City police station and patrolling vehicle driver were beaten up by a group of drunken youth in Electronics City on Wednesday night.

M. Nagaraj (52), and jeep driver, Jagadish, who sustained injuries in the attack were helped by passersby and taken to hospital. Nagaraj, who was on night rounds, noticed a group of five youth sitting on the bonnet of the car parked on the roadside and drinking. When he questioned them, the group entered into an argument with him, citing extension of deadline for closure of hotels and bars till 1 a.m.

When Nagaraj told them that the permission was for bars and not for people to drink on road and create ruckus, the accused started clicking his pictures, claiming that they knew senior police officers and threatened that they would complain to them against him.

Heated argument turned ugly when Nagaraj tried to stop them from taking their photographs.

The group of five youth soon overpowered Nagaraj and rained punches on him. Jagadish, who was at the wheel, rushed to his colleague’s help, but was also beaten up and pushed to the ground.

They accused fled after a few passersby noticed this and rushed to the help of the policemen.

Nagaraj, who later filed a complaint with his higher-ups, has provided details of the vehicle based on which the Electronics City police have launched a manhunt to trace the group of five men.
