Around 15 passengers had a narrow escape when a private bus driver in an inebriated state lost control and rammed the bus into a roadside tree before turning turtle in HSR Layout on Wednesday morning.

Due to the impact a huge tree was uprooted and the bus capsized in the middle of the road, creating a traffic blockade near the HSR Layout traffic police station.

The traffic police rushed to the spot and with the help of army personnel and fire force personnel rescued the injured and shifted them to Sakra Hospital.

The bus was on its way to Tin Factory from Banashankari. The driver, identified as Kiran Kumar (22), was drunk and the alcometer showed 220 ML reading, HSR Inspector Rao Ganesh told The Hindu .

Passers-by and the traffic police got the first aid kit from the police station and administered first-aid to the injured before shifting them to the hospital with the help of motorists. All the passengers sustained minor injuries and were out of danger.

The police later summoned a private crane and with the help of people, army personnel and the fire and emergency service personnel removed the bus and the uprooted tree within minutes.

The driver has been arrested for drunk driving and also under various sections of the Motor Vehicles Act and remanded to judicial custody.
