The Hanumanthnagar police have arrested a 24-year-old youth who attacked his girlfriend by slashing her throat with a penknife after the two fought here on Monday.

Passersby rushed the victim to a private nursing home. The girl was discharged later.

The police arrested Santosh, a cab driver, and remanded him in judicial custody.

The police said that the two had been going steady for the past one-and-a-half years but her parents objected to their relationship, even filing a harassment case against him.

On Monday, the two met and the victim informed Santosh that her parents were looking out for a marriage match for her and reportedly suggested that they elope.

Santosh, who had faced the consequences of a police complaint, declined. A fight ensued between them following which he slashed her neck with a penknife and escaped.

“We have taken up a murder attempt case against him and have remanded him in judicial custody,” the police said.
