The Bangalore police will not tolerate anyone physically threatening or abusing them when they are in the line of duty.
Police Commissioner Shankar M. Bidari and Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic and Security) Praveen Sood said instances of attacking and abusing police personnel were on the rise.
The rich and the drunk were responsible for such acts, they said, and threatened serious action against such offenders.
The two officials were speaking at Police Connect, an event organised by Manthan Systems, a private company.
Mr Bidari said: “Police play a pivotal role in maintaining law and order and regulating traffic in the city. People should respect and cooperate with them. Unfortunately, assaults against policemen are increasing. We will take stringent action against the perpetrators.”
Every year, the police lose at least six constables in accidents at traffic junctions and on an average, 20 policemen get injured in accidents when on duty. People should understand the risk involved in police personnel's lives, Mr Bidari said. Mr. Sood seconded his colleague saying, “No official or private individual can abuse or assault policemen.” On the occasion, jackets, rechargeable torches and umbrellas were given away to 300 police personnel.
