Donate blood stem cells, save a life

If you are willing to donate your blood stem cells, through a simple procedure, to save the life of an acute leukemia patient, turn up at Fraser Town on Saturday.

Aashim Joy, 32, a former Bengalurean now living in the U.S., is suffering from B-cell type acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and is in need of blood stem cell for a cure.

However, finding a genetic match for blood stem cells has been an uphill task.

Mansoor, a representative of Datri, an NGO that facilitates stem cell donation, said finding a genetic match was one in a million. Over 99% of the time, the match will be an Indian only, he added.

In pursuit of that one-in-a-million genetic match for Aashim, a screening drive has been organised at Ranka Palza, Fraser Town, on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4.00 p.m.

A simple test of a cheek swab will determine if it is a genetic match and the donation of blood stem cells is harmless and quick, Mr. Mansoor said.
