Heartbroken over her teenaged daughter’s death, a 41-year-old woman hanged herself at home within hours of the funeral.

The Ramanagaram Rural police said Thayavva Muthuraj, a resident of Manchegowdana Koppalu, near Bidadi, was inconsolable after her daughter M. Sunitha (17) died when her bus fell into a lake near Bangalore on Wednesday.

Sunitha, a second year PU student, was critically injured after a BMTC bus fell into the Chikkarasanahalli lake. She was rushed to the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) where she died of head injuries on Wednesday evening.

A family friend told The Hindu that Thayavva and her husband, Muthuraj, consulted a private eye bank and donated Sunitha’s eyes.

Alarmed relatives, seeing how distraught Thayavva was, had a premonition and kept vigil after Sunitha’s last rites. But she ended her life when the exhausted group fell asleep. Her body was discovered on Thursday morning.
