Derby getting bigger and better

July 11, 2010 05:26 pm | Updated 05:26 pm IST - BANGALORE:

Kingfisher Derby, or simply the Bangalore Derby, slated to run at the Bangalore Turf Club (BTC) course on Sunday, has been getting bigger and better in terms of stake money and the quality of the competition.

Ten horses will race over a 2000-metre distance with an overall prize money of Rs. 1.3 crore at stake. It is the 23rd successive year of the Derby since BTC's tie-up with the sponsor, Kingfisher.

Of 10 horses that get into the starting gates, Sun Kingdom, trained by Irfan Ghatala, is the favourite. But Moonlight Romance and Immense can also give the favourite a run for his money.

There will be enough glamour at the Derby as the glitterati consider it a must-do event. Fashion, glamour and the rich and the mighty mingling with the common punters should make a heady cocktail on Sunday.
