Department keeping city clubs under close watch

After the excise licence of Bangalore Club was suspended, the Excise Department is keeping a close watch on all the clubs in the city.

According to sources in the department, officials have been instructed to “closely monitor” the clubs and book cases for even “small violations”.

One of the clubs that have been booked for violations is the iconic Bangalore Turf Club. However, club members vehemently denied this.

Among the other clubs against whom cases have been booked are Bangalore Vihar Kendra, Jayanagar Association, Karnataka Engineers’ Academy, Banashankari Institute, Srinagara Association, H.S.R. Club, Country Club, and Karnataka Golf Club.

On Thursday, Deputy Commissioner of Bengaluru (Urban) district V. Shankar had confirmed that the Excise Department had booked cases against 26 clubs in the city.

Excise officials denied that the inspections were a fallout of the Bangalore Club incident. They added that the department routinely conducts inspections to ensure that rules were complied with. “These recent inspections are not out of the ordinary. While we book cases, the district administration can penalise the clubs,” an official said.
