A constable attached to the Rajanukunte police station in Bangalore Rural district shot dead a sub-inspector on Sunday, after he was denied leave to attend his house-warming ceremony.
Anand Kumar (45) shot B.S. Vijay Kumar (38) thrice from close range with a .303 rifle. One bullet pierced through Vijaya Kumar’s head, while another hit his chest.
Deputy Chief Minister R. Ashok has ordered a probe by Bipin Gopalkrishna, Additional Director-General of Police (Law and Order), and he has been asked to submit a report in 10 days.
The Deputy Chief Minister, who holds the Home portfolio, met the family members of the sub-inspector at Victoria Hospital here.
2009 incident
It may be recalled that Shivakumar (33), a KSRP constable, who nursed a grudge against police inspector Nage Gowda (52) killed the latter with an SLR before ending his life in Mysore in February 2009.
Heated argument
According to sources, Anand Kumar sought a few days’ leave from Sunday for the ceremony in Chickballapur. However, Vijay Kumar refused, saying there weren’t enough staff at the station. A heated argument ensued between them and Vijay Kumar reportedly humiliated Anand Kumar in front of his family members, who were present at the station. Later, Anand Kumar called circle inspector Shiva Reddy and alleged that Vijay Kumar had harassed him. Mr. Reddy told him to remain at the station until he came there and settled the issue. However, as arguments and counter-arguments continued, an enraged Anand Kumar fired three rounds. Hearing the gunshots, the other staff rushed to the chamber and saw a profusely bleeding Vijay Kumar collapsing in his chair.
They rushed him to a nearby private hospital, where he was declared brought dead.
The body was handed over to the family members after autopsy at Victoria Hospital in the evening.
Anand Kumar has been taken into custody and has been booked for murder and for violation of the Arms Act.
Terming the incident “tragic”, Inspector-General of Police Amar Kumar Pandey said it was premature to conclude the reason behind the attack. “We can come to a conclusion only after a probe,” he added.
