Continuing its demolition drive, the Mysore City Corporation (MCC) authorities on Saturday evicted encroachers from the footpath in and around the suburban bus-stand, much to people's relief.
The petty shops of fruit sellers, cobblers, footwear merchants and cloth merchants, among others, were razed by the MCC authorities as those who ran them watched helplessly.
A prepaid autorickshaw counter manned by the city traffic police, located at the entrance of the bus-stand, was also brought down. This means that autorickshaws can no longer use the footpath for parking. A few traffic policemen were heard questioning the MCC move to demolish the counter, saying they were not given notice. They were given three hours by the MCC, after which the structure was cleared.
A temple dedicated to Vinayaka, located at Halladakeri nearby, was also razed by the MCC, using excavators. It is said that the temple management had previously removed the idol following a notice served to it to clear the spot. A large number of police personnel was present at the spot to prevent any trouble. Assistant commissioners of the MCC were at hand to supervise the evictions.
