Garbage, which is taken to dump yards on the city’s outskirts, often makes it to farmlands and open land in villages.
During the recce of Jigani’s granite cutting and polishing units here by the Karnataka State Pollution Board, it came to light that granite quarries too doubled as dumping yards. A granite cutting unit owner said that cumulatively the garbage dumped hereabouts is at least 20 tonnes.
Reacting to this, KSPCB Chairman Vaman Acharya said: “No formal clearances have been given to dump garbage in these quarries but we have been mixing the garbage with slurry. We have not opposed the dumping of garbage here.”
He explained that the mixing of slurry, garbage and red mud is scientific.
