Deemed varsities stop medical, dental entrance test process midway

SC has said no private colleges, association or deemed university can conduct entrance test for these courses

May 08, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - BENGALURU:

Students who had registered and paid fees for multiple entrance exams for admissions to medical and dental colleges under various deemed universities in Karnataka will no longer take the exams as the universities have cancelled all of them.

Universities such as Manipal University, which had already begun conducting the entrance exam, have decided not to conduct it from Sunday. Many universities have midway stopped receiving applications for these exams.

The move comes a day after the Supreme Court order made it clear that no private colleges, association or deemed university can conduct their exam for admissions to MBBS or BDS courses. The Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (COMEDK) too has decided to cancel its Undergraduate Entrance Test (UGET) for medical and dental seat aspirants, which was scheduled for Sunday.

Nitte University

Registrar of Nitte University M.S. Moodithaya said 5,000 students had applied for the common entrance exam for MBBS and BDS courses. “We will be following the process prescribed by the Supreme Court,” Mr. Moodithaya told The Hindu .

Manipal University

Narayan Sabhahit, registrar of Manipal University, said the Manipal University Online Entrance Test for medical and dental courses was conducted from April 12 to May 7. But the entrance test from medical and dental courses would not be conducted from May 8.

The Karnataka Religious and Linguistic Minority Professional Colleges Association, which had scheduled to conduct the UGET on May 22, will cancel it for medical and dental seat aspirants. The test is for candidates who seek admission under the linguistic/religious minority community category. The association was to conduct the exam for admissions to eight medical and dental colleges, but it will now conduct it only for admissions to 12 engineering colleges, said Shafi Ahmed, association secretary.

‘Based on NEET results’

An official from the Yenepoya University said 2,500 students had applied for its entrance exam. They had to stop receiving applications on Friday following the Supreme Court’s order. “We will wait for the results of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test Phase 2, scheduled for July 24, to fill the seats,” the official said.

Vice-Chancellor of Sri Siddhartha University Balakrishna Shetty said that based on NEET scores, admission under quotas such as SC, ST and NRI would be made to the medical college.

Other tests

However, universities that have a common test will continue to conduct it to fill seats of other courses. Pharmacy students will appear for the Manipal University Online Entrance Test scheduled on Sunday.

KLE University (deemed university) registrar V.D. Patil said the university would go ahead with entrance tests for a slew of non-medical, non-dental courses, including B.Pharm., BAMS, and Pharm.D. as per schedule.
