There was tension on Wipro Avenue Road in Electronic City here on Wednesday morning soon after a pillion rider was run over by a water tanker.

Nadeem (18), a mason and resident of Shikaripalya, was riding pillion on his friend Riyaz’s motorcycle, when the accident occurred. Police said the water tanker hit Nadeem’s vehicle on its rear and the impact was such that he fell off and immediately was run over. He died on the spot.

The accident occurred 100 metres away from Shikaripalya.

As soon as the news spread, at least 300 people from the locality came running to the main road. The mob chased, caught and thrashed the water tanker driver, Naveen Kumar (26), who was trying to flee.

Two traffic police officials, who tried to rescue the driver, were also beaten up by the angry mob. Sub-Inspector Babu was also injured in the attack.

Two Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) buses were stoned. Police sought the help of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) stationed in the area and Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) to reign in the mob. The mob made a quick run as the reserve police personnel resorted to caning. Two KSRP platoons are stationed at the spot at present.

Before reinforcements could reach the spot, the mob tried setting fire to the water tanker, which was put out. However, the driver’s cabin was partially damaged in the fire. Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Alok Kumar said police had the video of the incident and action would be taken against miscreants.

Electronics City police registered five cases for obstructing government servants and damaging property against unnamed individuals.

Traffic police registered a case of causing death due to negligence against tanker driver Naveen Kumar and arrested him.
