Custodial death in Tumakuru

A case of custodial death was registered in Tumakuru Town police station on Wednesday when a man from Bengluru died after he was arrested on Tuesday night for possessing a weapon.

The deceased has been identified as Mohammed Afta, 39.

The Sub-Inspector of Tumakuru Town police station who was in Cholamballi on Tuesday night saw a group of 15-20 people physically assaulting three men, one of whom was Afta. He allegedly had a pistol in his hand. Afta and the other men were escorted to the station.

According to the police, while they were filing the FIR under the Arms Act, 1959, Afta collapsed. He was taken to the district hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

As per the guidelines of State Human Rights Commission, the case will be handed over to CID (Crime Investigation Department) for further investigation. There are cases, including one for murder, pending against Afta in several stations.
