The 65th Independence Day was celebrated by various organisations and institutions in the city with grandeur. The day was also marked by colourful ceremonies.
Cultural programme on patriotic lines presented by students with special music rendition by the staff marked the celebrations at the Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore, which raised the passionate spirit symbolic of the day. The highlight of event was a street play — Aham Brahmasmi — that emphasised on non-dharma promoted communal harmony, a release said, and added that flag badges were distributed to the audience. A collage making competition with a theme on India Tomorrow, was organised.
While Divisional Railway Manager S. Mani unfurled the national flag on the occasion, a children's park was also inaugurated at Mahatma Gandhi Railway Colony.
At the local head office of the State Bank of India, General Manager Krishna Mohan Trivedi unfurled the national flag.
Independence Day at the Bangalore University commenced with rendition of bhajans and patriotic songs by NSS volunteers of Seshadripuram College and performing arts students of the university.
A painting competition was organised for children at the Bal Bhavan in Cubbon Park to mark the occasion.
A cycle rally was taken out for about 11 km from Langford Road, which went through Jayanagar, Visvesvarapuram and J.C. Road as part of the Independence Day celebrations and it gave the message against pollution.
Independence from Corruption programme was observed at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc.) in support of Jan Lokpal Bill drafted by the civil society team led by anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare. The event was started with a signature campaign in a show of solidarity with India Against Corruption movement.
