Eleven years after the arrest of a Pakistan-based terrorist in Mysuru, the Principal City Civil and Sessions Court on Tuesday convicted Mohammed Fahad Hai under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002, (PMLA) and sentenced him to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹10,000.
The court also directed the authorities concerned to confiscate cash from his bank account amounting to ₹44,174 along with the interest, which is estimated to add up to ₹90,470 .
The case dates back to 2006, when on the basis of information that certain terrorists from Pakistan were planning terrorist activities in Mysuru, a team of police kept watch near the high tension power line at Vijaynagar Ring Road and intercepted two people riding a moped.
The incident took place around 11.45 p.m. on October 26, 2006.
Police attacked
When the police asked the duo for their names, the pillion rider said that he only spoke Hindi. In response, one of the officers showed him his identity card and informed them in Hindi that they had to step down from their two-wheeler. The pillion rider jumped down, took out a rifle from the bag on his lap and fired on the police squad. It took another police squad to overpower the pillion rider and arrest both men. They identified themselves as Pakistani nationals Mohammed Ali Hussain and the pillion rider as Mohammed Fahad Hai who were living illegally in Rajiv Nagar, Mysuru.
The police, during their investigation, learned that they were active members of the Al-Badr organisation and had entered India without valid travel documents.
They were in possession of an AK-47 rifle, a pistol, live bullets and mobile and satellite phones. All the above arms, ammunition and the two-wheeler were seized.
Based on a charge sheet filed by Vijaya Nagar police, the Enforcement Directorate initiated the investigation under Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
