Couple in debt ends life

October 04, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - Bengaluru:

A couple in Channapatna taluk committed suicide on Friday, as they were unable to repay their loan.

According to police, while B. Mangalamma (32) consumed poison near her village in Channapatna, her husband Basavalingappa (38) hanged himself in his room in Hongasandra.

Basavalingappa worked as an assistant in a bakery near Hongasandra while Mangalamma was looking after their one-acre farmland in Banasahalli, near Channapatna. Basavalingappa had incurred losses of over Rs. 4 lakh in agriculture and shifted to the city two months ago. He had taken loans from banks and private lenders. The crops failed and creditors pressured him to return their money, the police said quoting family members of Basavalingappa.

“Thinking he would earn in Channapatna town, Basavalingappa joined as a helper in a bakery. Some creditors on Friday morning abused Mangalamma and asked her to pay up or face consequences. Humiliated by this, she consumed pesticides. Basavalingappa, who came to know about this, hanged himself from the ceiling of the room, where he was staying, said the police.
