Councillor’s brother arrested for assault

He was protesting against alleged disparity in water supply

The brother of a councillor from Rayapuram and five others, who were protesting the alleged disparity in water supply to the ward, allegedly manhandled BWSSB officials. On a complaint by an assistant engineer of BWSSB, the Chamarajpet police arrested Keshava Murthy, brother of councillor Shashikala; Narasimha, Raju, Ganesh, Venkatesh and Gangadhar for assaulting a government servant.

On Saturday, around 9.30 a.m., residents of Rayapuram ward, led by Keshava Murthy, allegedly barged into the BWSSB sub-station next to Idgah Miadan in Chamarajpet demanding regular water supply.

The mob allegedly manhandled and assaulted Hemanth Kumar, assistant engineer. Mr. Kumar lodged a complaint with the police.

Rayapuram councillor Shashikala told The Hindu that the ward lacked regular water supply despite repeated requests. “Our ward mostly has people from the lower strata of society. BWSSB officials often say that most don’t pay their water bills and, hence, have no right to ask for regular supply. This is not right. There was no water supply in our ward on Friday when people were celebrating Ugadi, which is why they protested,” she alleged.
