Council to evaluate Legal Metrology staff

The Department of Legal Metrology has roped in the services of the National Productivity Council (NPC) to assess the performance and productivity of its employees.

The Department of Legal Metrology, which comes under the Food and Civil Supplies Ministry headed by Dinesh Gundu Rao, has decided to conduct performance evaluation of each of its employee. The NPC, a public enterprise of the Centre, will give a detailed report to the State in two months recommending measures to improve the productivity of the employees, Mr. Rao said.

The NPC team would visit the department and work out solutions towards accelerating productivity and enhancing competitiveness of employees. The NPC had been asked to plan priorities, resource mobilisation, performance evaluation and redressal of complaints system within a stipulated time frame by the department, he said.

The Minister has decided to fill vacancies in the department based on the recommendations made by the NPC. Against 503 sanctioned posts, the department has 303 staff strength.

Owing to shortage of staff, the department has not been able to take stringent action against retail shops in commercial complexes that are selling products at prices higher than the maximum retail price (MRP).

The department conducted 1.37 lakh inspections during 2014–15 and booked 31,400 cases against errant shop owners.

It has collected compounding fee of Rs. 6.78 crore. It has collected verification fee of Rs. 17.82 crore.
