Congress worker killed in stampede at Kanteerava

A Congress party worker aged around 45 years was killed in a stampede that took place during the swearing in ceremony of Mr Siddaramaiah as the Chief Minister at the Kanteerava stadium in the city on Monday.

Manjappa, a resident of Kadugodi, had come to witness Mr Siddaramaiah's swearing in ceremony along with his friends.

The stampede took place while he was entering the stadium premises from Gate No. 2, where commotion prevailed. Manjappa, who collapsed in the melee, was rushed to Bowring hospital, where he succumbed. The Cubbon Park police have registered a case of unnatural death.

The venue of the Chief Minister's swearing in ceremony, which is usually in front of Vidhana Soudha premises, had been shifted to Kanteerava Stadium, in view of the ongoing Metro work in front of Vidhana Soudha,

Thousands of people including party workers and supporters from different parts of the State had arrived at the stadium to witness the event for which elaborate security arrangements were made. More than 3,000 police personnel were deployed for the ceremony.
