Congress sees red over NaMo

It was all about NaMo in the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Tuesday, much to the chagrin of the Opposition Congress. The BJP, which is the ruling party in the council, celebrated the birthday of the party’s Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi by bursting firecrackers.

Led by the former Minister R. Ashok, Jayanagar MLA B.N. Vijayakumar and the party’s city unit president Subba Narasimha, the BJP councillors, including Mayor B.S. Sathyanarayana, stood behind huge banners with birthday wishes.

Opposition Leader M.K. Gunashekar said the Mayor was supposed to be non-partisan. “By participating, he has shown he is partisan.”

Mr. Sathyanarayana told The Hindu that he was on his way to the old building from the council building when the party leaders asked him to stand with them. “I could not refuse and obliged their request,” he said.

“I will announce in the BBMP council on Wednesday that no one should burst firecrackers on the BBMP premises,” he added.
