Congress plans mega event to mark two years in office

The big question: will Rahul Gandhi come?

May 07, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 07:04 am IST - BENGALURU:

Even as the Congress in the State is gearing up to hold a mega convention to celebrate the completion of two years of the Siddaramaiah government, State party leaders are worrying over whether Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi will make it to the function.

The Congress has decided to hold a ‘Sadana Samavesha’ (convention to mark their achievements) in Davangere on May 16 to inform the people about the achievements of the two-year-old Siddaramaiah government. The government completes two years on May 13.

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president G. Parameshwara, who called on Chief Minister Siddaramaiah at the latter’s residence on Wednesday to finalise the preparedness for the mega event, told presspersons that Mr. Gandhi would be invited to the function, but did not guarantee his participation. If Mr. Gandhi does not attend the function, he will be invited to the State soon for another programme, he said.

AICC general secretary in-charge of Karnataka Digvijay Singh, Ministers, legislators, MPs, KPCC office-bearers, and over two lakh party workers are expected to participate. The party has decided to organise the function at a stadium in Davangere, Dr. Parameshwara said.

The model code of conduct announced by the State Election Commission for gram panchayat elections will not come in the way of holding the convention. An official in the SEC told The Hindu that the code of conduct would not be enforceable in urban areas. Moreover, GP elections are not fought on party symbols.

The KPCC has instructed leaders to work for the victory of the party-supported candidates in the GP polls to be held on May 29 and June 2.
