The State Congress has alleged that Governor Vajubhai Vala had shown “disrespect” to the national anthem by walking off the podium when it was being played at an official function at the Raj Bhavan on Tuesday.

The Congress is planning to draw the attention of the Union government to the incident which took place after Mr. Vala administered the oath of office to Raghavendra Singh Chauhan as judge of the High Court of Karnataka.

Senior Congress leader and former Education Minister B.K. Chandrashekar told presspersons here on Wednesday that some leaders of the party were of the opinion that the issue should be brought to the notice of the Centre. There was no word of explanation from the Governor’s office on the issue, he said.

How can the Governor, who preaches nationalism and patriotism in schools and colleges, show “disrespect” to the national anthem, he asked.

Mr. Chandrashekar said unnecessary controversy was created when Infosys chief mentor N.R. Narayana Murthy’s alleged remarks on the national anthem during the former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s visit to Infosys facility in Mysuru in 2007. Mr. Murthy had later apologised for playing the instrumental version of the anthem during the function.
