The Congress faces “a near wipe-out” in the up coming Delhi elections, said Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Yogendra Yadav on Wednesday, adding that the votes that Congress loses will be AAP’s gain.
The Congress’s defeats in the Lok Sabha elections and in the Assembly elections in Haryana and Maharashtra were “not routine defeats.” History shows us that wherever the Congress has fallen below the 20 per cent mark, it has “never come back,” he said.
“One thing is clear. The Congress as a nation-wide party may cease to exist in the next four to five years. And this will create a vacuum in the opposition.”
AAP meanwhile, is on a strong wicket in Delhi, Mr. Yadav said. A significant section in Delhi that voted for Narendra Modi as Prime Minister also wants to see Arvind Kejriwal as Chief Minister, he said. While AAP has faced “challenges with the middleclass,” there is a “resurgence of support from the working class,” he said.
