Confusion reigned supreme on the busy Mysuru Road on Monday morning, as thousands of vehicles inched forward in bumper-to-bumper traffic as a result of traffic diversions put in place by the city traffic police. The diversions were to facilitate the reconstruction of the road over the drain on the Vrushabhavathi valley near Kavika here.
The circuitous traffic restriction imposed due to the closing of Mysuru Road – which is a one-way now from Sirsi Circle towards Nayandanahalli – saw hundreds of vehicles pile up all around the area.
A line of vehicles were seen from Sirsi Circle to Rajarajeshwari Nagar, while Chord road was choked till Maruti Mandir, Vijayanagar.
“It was utter chaos. It took me an hour to cover two kilometres on the road,” said Shiva Kumar, an employee of a private firm. Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike is undertaking a Rs. 5.47 crore project to replace the colonial-era bridge.
However, with work expected to take at least six months, traffic police expect issues to remain for months.
“Both Mysuru Road and the stretch of West of Chord Road, which have now been made one way, are crucial arterial roads that link major junctions. Police personnel were on the field regulating vehicular movement, as the chaos was expected,” said S. Girish, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic-West).
