Concerns about Theppotsava at Sankey Tank

October 25, 2014 12:53 am | Updated May 23, 2016 04:32 pm IST - BANGALORE:

After questions were raised about organising ‘Flugtag’ recently in Sankey Tank, another event is attracting opposition. Citizens have complained to the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) about the Theppotsava of the Sri Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy temple, which is scheduled to be held from Saturday.

Dasarathi. G.V., a resident of Sadashivanagar, one of the complainants, said though temple authorities have assured that the event will take place only in the kalyani of the lake, it is not a small-scale event. “It is not just floating of lamps. The event sees a lot of lighting and big sound systems apart from large floating objects,” he said.

Citing ‘ Flugtag’, citizens pointed out that use of the lake for commercial purposes is becoming a regular thing. They are concerned about the migratory birds and other aquatic creatures that the water body is home to.

‘Permission given’

Meanwhile, BBMP Commissioner M. Lakshminarayan said that the festival is held once in five years wherein idols of deities are taken in a boat. “The BBMP's Horticulture Department had earlier given permission for the same. The organisers say that it is just for a few hours and not intended to trouble the aquatic life. There are a few dissenting voices. We will be more vigilant and careful while allowing such festivals and celebrations in our water bodies the next time,” he said.
