Bangalore University’s (BU) academic bodies have cleared the decks for the implementation of restructured undergraduate courses from this academic year. However, college managements say no official communication has reached them even though the academic year commenced at least three weeks ago.
This has led to a lack of clarity in the syllabus to be taught. BU’s various Boards of Studies had recently revised the syllabi of all streams to suit the Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS).
A college representative, on condition of anonymity, said there was no uniformity in the syllabus being followed in various colleges affiliated to the BU. Though the new syllabi and other guidelines have been uploaded on BU’s official website, no circular has been sent to colleges sounding them about the changes, he said.
“As a result, a lot of colleges are in the dark about which syllabus to follow. Some have even commenced classes using the old syllabus. Especially in B.Com. and BBM, where intake is full in many colleges, this will be problematic as there are changes in the scoring pattern,” the official said.
The principal of another affiliated college said they had started teaching using the old syllabus as there was no official word from the university. “What was passed in BU’s Academic Council and Syndicate is an internal matter that needs to be communicated to the colleges,” the principal said.
Vice-Chancellor B. Thimme Gowda said a letter with the details of the restructured course was despatched to colleges on June 28. “Whoever is approaching me is also being given a copy of the letter. I am also willing to clear any doubts over phone or email,” he said.
Members of the Bangalore University First Grade College Principals’ Association are likely to include the CBCS as a topic of discussion at the association’s meeting on Monday.
