Noted scientist C.N.R. Rao will deliver the address at the convocation of the University of Agricultural Sciences-Bengaluru to be held on Saturday.

Announcing this at a press conference here on Thursday, UAS-B Vice-chancellor H. Shivanna said 845 students would get various degrees on the occasion. While 574 persons would get bachelors’ degrees, 204 would get masters degrees and 67 would be conferred with doctoral degrees.

In addition to this, 119 gold medals are being awarded to the top performers. An interesting feature this time is that a majority of the gold medallists are girls as they account for 68 medals, the vice-chancellor said.

In all, 30,000 graduates, 8,000 post-graduates and 1,200 post-doctoral degree holders had passed out in the last five decades from the UAS-B, which is the oldest agricultural university in the State, he said.

Nutritional Cell

Listing various activities being planned by the University, he said a nutritional cell would be set up in the University campus to provide counselling through dieticians to students and faculty. He observed that such a cell had become necessary in the wake of the stress taking a toll on the health of agricultural researchers due to their hectic schedule. The proposed centre which would become operational from March 14 would also focus on physical fitness needs through yoga.

Similarly, the previous year’s budgetary proposal of increasing the reservation to children of farmers and farm labourer in various courses of the University from the present 23.8 per cent to 40 per cent would be implemented from the coming academic year, Dr. Shivanna said.

Replying to queries, he said the University would consider the suggestion to sensitize legislators on recent trends and developments in agriculture for legislators in a bid to take them into confidence in the process of bridging the gap between lab and land.

University’s Director of Education D.P. Kumar, Research Director M.A. Shankar, Registrar M.B. Raje Gowda and Dean for Post-graduate studies K.N. Ganeshaiah were also present.
