CM launches Kannada app

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday launched a mobile phone application to enable Kannada interface in Android phones. It can be downloaded free of cost from the website of Kannada and Culture Department at www.karnataka.gov.in/kcit.

The App enables the users to type messages and access data in Kannada.

A committee headed by Dr K Chidananda Gowda, former Vice-Chancellor of Kuvempu University, Shimoga, has developed Unicode Converter System that enables the users to download any content in Kannada from any part of the world without any difficulty into the Android cell phones.

Braille too

Special provision has been made to enable even visually-challenged people to use it as a Braille Script option.

The Unicode software would be made available free and it would help the state government to make it the common source code for usage of Kannada in cell phones and computers all over the world in the coming days, Mr Siddaramaiah said.

Cultural heritage

The App has a feature to provide complete information on historic monuments of Karnataka and cultural festivals such as Dasara, Hampi Utsav, Kadamba Utsav, Chalukya Utsav, Lakkundi Utsav, Basava Utsav being organised by Kannada and Culture department.

Kannada and Culture Minister Umashree, Department Principal Secretary Shalini Rajneesh and Jnanpith awardee Chandrashekar Kambar were present.
