Pre-university students are an anxious lot these days with textbooks not being available in the market yet though their classes began more than a fortnight ago.
Neeraj R., a second PU science student of National College, Bangalore, said: “Two days ago, I went to several book stores only to be told that the textbooks were not available. As this is a crucial year for us, we should have got the textbooks at least a month ago. It has been more than a fortnight since our college has begun, but we have no textbooks.”
Calls made by The Hindu to several book stores across the city revealed that some of them are yet to receive books in all subjects, except languages.
Many store owners complained about the shortage in supply of PU textbooks, especially those of core arts and commerce subjects.
Sources in the Karnataka Text Book Society (KTBS) said that students could obtain all the titles by this month-end. Rame Gowda, Commissioner, Department of Pre- University Education, said while some books will be available in the market this week, others will be made available soon.
Ravinandan B.B., secretary of the All India Democratic Students’ Organisation’s Bangalore District Committee, said delay in supplying textbooks to PU students causes inconvenience to both students and teachers.
AIDSO ProtestAIDSO has said in a release that they will stage a protest here on Thursday to urge the government to speed up the process of supplying textbooks to PU students.
