Starting Friday, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will undertake the gargantuan exercise of finding out exactly how much garbage is generated in the city. Before sending the garbage to the dumping yards and landfills, the trash will be weighed, and this exercise will be carried out till February-end.
The BBMP took this decision after the High Court directed the civic body to undertake a monthlong exercise to find out the actual quantum of waste generated daily. The BBMP currently has no data to support its claim that 4,000 tonnes of garbage is generated in the city.
Following the High Court directive, BBMP Commissioner Siddaiah on Thursday held a meeting with engineers dealing with the municipal solid waste, zonal-level officers and environment engineers. In the landfills at Mandur and Terra Firma there are weighing bridges. In other landfill sites the waste will be weighed at private weighing bridges, and the data will be recorded meticulously by BBMP zonal commissioners and engineers.
Sources said that zonal engineers had been also told to find out the amount of wet waste collected in the ward, which could be given to farmers for composting. Mr. Siddaiah also said the focus should increase on popularising segregation of waste at source.
