Saturday was an opportunity for the city to welcome darkness for the sake of the Earth, and turn energy conservationists for at least an hour. Non-essential lights were turned off between 8.30 p.m. and 9.30 p.m. in organisations and even some homes as part of the annual ‘Earth Hour’ initiative.
This initiative by the World Wide Fund for Nature started in Sydney, Australia in 2007 as a simple lights-off event. It has spread across 7,000 cities and towns worldwide. With 172 countries and territories joining in this year, it’s set to interconnect the global community, sharing opportunities and challenges of creating a sustainable world.
WWF India organised the “India Unplugged” event at the Indiranagar Corner Stone Park, telling Bengalureans of all ages on how they can conserve energy.
Companies that observed Earth Hour included Wipro and Ness Software Engineering Services.
