It is located at the Srirampura Railway Crossing near Jakkur

September 18, 2014 12:19 am | Updated 12:47 am IST - Bangalore:

To mark World Bamboo Day on Thursday, a bus shelter built using bamboo will be inaugurated at the Srirampura Railway Crossing near Jakkur. With design ideas originating from architect Neelam Manjunath, the Centre for Green Building Materials and Technology (CGMBT) and the Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Rural Energy and Development have installed a 10ftx10ft bus shelter of bamboo at a cost of Rs. 1 lakh with an inclusive design model consisting of a bench, space for a wheelchair and a dustbin.

“We want to create awareness about this modest green material that could be generously used in infrastructure projects,” says Neelam.

The bamboo bus shelter was built by 25 participants of a two-day workshop led by trainer Gurudayal.

“BMTC says that of the 6,000 bus-stop shelters in Bangalore, only 1,000 have roof. So BMTC is considering covering them with bamboo.
