For the first time ever, you don't have to huff up the stairs to use a footbridge. The city now has a pedestrian footbridge (also known as skywalk) complete with two lifts to cross the busy Kempe Gowda Road, which is bound to benefit hundreds of pedestrians.

Mayor Sharadamma inaugurated the skywalk on Wednesday.

The 20-metre skywalk has been constructed on DBOOT (Design, Build, Own, Operate and Transfer) basis by Rajdeep Buildcon Pvt. Ltd. A communiqué from the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the ground clearance is around 5.5 metres.

The more athletic pedestrians may climb the two flights of stairs with a height of 14.1 metres each. As for the less fit, they can pack themselves into the lifts, 18 at a time.

Office fortified

Security at the BBMP head office has been upped with the erection of new grill and three new gates at a cost of Rs. 2.25 crore.

The communiqué said that the grill compound is similar to the one around Vidhana Soudha.

Three security stations have also been constructed by the side of the three gates.

Security will be stepped up to prevent the entry of unauthorised persons and vehicles, the communiqué added.
