The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Thursday arrested three persons in connection with the kidnapping of Chikkamagaluru businessman Tejas Gowda.

Suspended Dy.SP Kallappa Handibag, who was implicated in allegedly abetting the kidnap, subsequently ended his life on July 5.

Investigators gave the names of the arrested persons are Jeevaraj (20), who works as a bouncer in Halasuru here; Yashash (21), a college student from Gayathrinagar; and cab driver Keerthi (23). They were allegedly part of the kidnap and extortion carried out at the behest of the prime suspect, Praveen Khandya, who is still at large. Two other suspects, Naveen Shetty and Abhi alias Abhiram alias Abhijit, are also absconding.

So far, the CID has arrest six persons in connection with the case. According to the police, Tejas had lost Rs. 25 lakh in a cricket bet to Nataraj, who runs a chit fund. He had promised to pay the money in two instalments, but failed to do so. Nataraj got Praveen, his friend, to recover the money from Tejas. Praveen, using his contacts, is suspected of involving Handibag in collecting the ransom, said a senior police officer.
