Residents living near South End Circle need not check the clock to read the time. They just have to be all ears and listen to the chimes from the 61-foot clock tower ‘Ambara Chumbana’.
The one-of-its-kind clock tower will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar and Deputy Chief Minister R. Ashok on Saturday.
The clock tower has three legs and is made of green granite. It also has three faces, each around 8 ft in length. The clock, which has Roman, Arabic and Kannada numerals, chimes for 20 seconds every hour between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m., beginning with the sound of the conch.
The other unique feature of the clock tower is that it has special lights for each day of the week.
According to local councillor N.R. Ramesh, this was decided astrologically. “On Monday, the light will be white, red on Tuesday, green on Wednesday, yellow on Thursday, light blue on Friday, dark blue on Saturday and pink on Sunday. The chimes can be heard in a 3-km radius around the clock tower,” he said.
The clock, which is solar-powered, has been constructed at a cost of Rs. 90 lakh. The area around the clock tower has been beautified and focus lights have also been installed. Mr. Ramesh said the clock tower was no less a monument and the Information Department has declared it as one.
