Internal investigation into an alleged money-doubling case, in which H.S. Shivakumar Swamy, a senior doctor at the State-run Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS), was involved, began here with MIMS director Pushpa Sarkar issuing an emergency notice to the dentist calling for an explanation.

Mr. Swamy and his associates had allegedly tried to dupe gullible people by promising to convert “black money into white” at Bangalore in the first week of February this year. Although the Income Tax officers had lodged a first-information report against Mr. Swamy and others at K.R. Puram police station , the issue was not brought to the notice of the MIMS officials concerned.

Notice Documents available with The Hindu mention that Deputy Director of Income Tax M.S. Nethrapal, Income Tax officers Somasundaran and Amarnatha Yadav, and other officers raided a house in V.V. Layout, near Vinayaka Nagar in Hosakote taluk, and arrested a few persons in connection with the case.

However, Mr. Swamy and several others had escaped during the raid.

Complaint filed Mr. Nethrapal has filed a complaint against Mr. Swamy and others under Sections 420 (Cheating), 468 (Forgery for the purpose of cheating), 471 (Using as genuine a forged document or electronic record), 489A (Counterfeiting currency notes or bank notes), 489C (Possession of forged or counterfeit currency notes or bank notes) and 489E (Making use of or using documents resembling currency notes or bank notes) and some relevant sections of the Income Tax Act, 1961.

Absconded “Mr. Swamy (accused number 4 in the case) had absconded during the raid. However, he obtained a conditional bail from the court concerned, later,” Satish Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Bangalore East Division), told this correspondent over phone.

Not replied Sources at the MIMS said that Ms. Sarkar issued a notice to Mr. Swamy on Thursday. The accused dentist had been directed to submit a reply by Friday morning. Nevertheless, the reply had not reached the director till Saturday evening.

Meeting to be held The matter will be discussed at the governing council meeting to be held at MIMS on Monday, the sources said. Ms. Sarkar might explain the issue to the Medical Secretary, who has the powers to initiate disciplinary action against the accused.
