The city police swung into action on Wednesday, filing criminal cases against four police personnel and suspending two others, after being criticised by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for not acting on complaints of misdemeanour against policemen.
In the first instance, cases were filed against an Inspector and three constables attached to the HAL police station for alleged extortion. In the second, two constables belonging to the Cubbon Park police station were suspended after theft cases were filed against them.
The police booked criminal cases against the four HAL police station personnel for allegedly detaining a man and attempting to extort Rs. 3 lakh from him.
They were booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act, wrongful restraint, confinement and robbery, but have not yet been arrested
HAL police Inspector Rajesh along with constables Bheem Singh, Dinesh and Venkatesh had earlier been suspended following a complaint by Javed, who had told the area Deputy Commissioner of Police that he had been subjected to extortion by the four.
The complainant Javed had been booked for theft some time ago but claimed he had not committed any fresh robbery since his punishment a few years ago.
Javed alleged that the four police personnel had detained him without charge and demanded a bribe of Rs. 3 lakh. They reportedly told him that false cases would be booked against him if he did not comply with their demands.

According to the police, Sudhakar and Vithala purportedly received a tip-off that Weng Ping had stashed red sanders wood in her hotel room on Kasturba Road. The tourist alleged that the constables raided her room, harassed her and took her valuables.
