Posing as passengers, the city traffic police conducted a special drive on Thursday morning and booked cases against 23 autorickshaw drivers who were demanding excess fares in and around Majestic and seized their vehicles.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Jagadeesh G.A., who led the drive, said that several teams, equipped with hidden cameras, conducted the drive. Those who demanded excess fares were then identified, cases were booked against them and their vehicles seized. “The camera recording will be used as evidence against the erring autorickshaw drivers in the court if they dispute it,” Mr. Jagadeesh said.

The five-hour exercise that began at 4 a.m. was part of Sugama Sanchara campaign launched recently, he added.

The court imposed a fine totalling Rs. 33,000 on 15 autorickshaw drivers, and the rest are yet to appear before the court, he said.
