The Bangalore city police shot a career criminal in the leg when he allegedly attacked them in a bid to escape near the Binny Mill canteen on Magadi Road early on Saturday.

Jayaram (32), who has at least 14 criminal cases pending against him, later underwent a surgery at Victoria Hospital. The police said K.P. Agarahara inspector B.U. Pradeep, who was injured in the attack, was treated as an out-patient and discharged later.

Mr. Pradeep was on night rounds when he was tipped off that Jayaram was near the Binny Mill area. He and his staff cornered him and asked him to surrender, but Jayaram lunged at them with a knife. Mr. Pradeep opened fire and the bullet hit the other man on the leg.

Jayaram is a history-sheeter involved in inter alia two murders and kidnap of an underage girl. She escaped his clutches but her parents were too scared to complain against him. A court issued a warrant against him after he jumped bail. The wanted man would brazenly extort money from vendors and small businessmen but none dared complain against him, the police said.
